It owes its name to the Collegiata, a church dedicated to the Saints Pietro and Stefano. The current church, built in the years 1515-1543 on the projects of Tommaso Rodari (1484-1527), is the result of extensions and subsequent modifications. The austere Renaissance facade is clad in Castione stone. The interior is characterized by its typically Baroque nature.

On the north side of the Collegiata, there is the Oratorio della Confraternita di S. Marta, a rectangular 17th century building.

The square assumed its current features around the 18th century, when the dwellings were built – most of them were built in Lombard style – by some of the most influential patrician families of Bellinzona, such as Chicherio (No. 1 and 7) and Gabuzzi (No. 5). On their facades there are decorative elements from different eras, including the busts of famous people, wrought iron balconies and rich pictorial decorations.
