In 1848, populations across Europe rose up against long-standing authoritarian regimes and proclaimed governments inspired by liberal beliefs. In Milan, locals climbed the barricades and drove out their Austrian occupiers in an uprising known as the Five Days of Milan. Conservative forces soon went on the counter-attack, however, and Switzerland found itself as a republican and democratic island in the middle of a monarchical and anti-liberal Europe.
